Slipform Canada (Equipment Rental) Frequently Asked Questions

Operating the slipform machine

How are our operators different than others?

Gambini Consulting operators are trained on and operate every make and model and slipform paver available. We only employ the most experienced operators in the world and we will not tolerate mistakes. Our operators travel the world and specialize in training new operators or operating for companies around the world.

Each of our operators averages over 350,000ft of curb, sidewalks, barrier walls and paving a year.

Can we rent the machine without an operator?

Yes of course however, we will need to approve anyone operating these machines and they will need to take a course that we provide regardless of their experience. This is not because we want to make more money off of you, its to prevent what could be hundreds of thousands of dollars from coming out of your company’s pocket by making a mistake pouring or by causing damage to our machines.

Who is responsible if the machine breaks down?

If we are operating, we are! Our operators are trained on how to repair anything that can be repaired within 20 minutes with these machines in a timely manor. To this day we have never lost a concrete load due to a break down.

If we we not operating and you experience a break down, if it is mechanical such as engine problems we will cover the costs of concrete sitting onsite. If you experience a break down as a result of operator error, we do not cover any costs.

What if our operator makes a mistake?

To this day we have never taken out any concrete that was a result of our stringline or operating. However, to protect ourselves and your company we ask that you sign off on stringline and operating after viewing offset and elevation measurements.

Do we operate machines other than Gomaco?

Our operators are skilled on every make and model of slipform machines.

Who maintains our slipform fleet?

We do! We know these machines inside out which makes us the best people to maintain our fleet of slipform pavers. Our maintenance program doesn’t just include changing the filters and oils but a comprehensive calibration of all the settings, sensors and machines functions.

We replace all hydraulic hoses at the first sign of wear and tear to avoid any downtown onsite.

Can our operators pour a tight radius?

Our operators are widely considered the best in the world by many and they have a 99% success rate at radii tighter than 2ft.

Our machines are capable of pouring a 15″ radius.

How fast does this process go?

Under the right circumstances we can pour 3000ft of product by 12pm depending on the profile.

This depends on the crew following behind the machine and with a brand new crew we will not go as fast because we do not want to drain them. We will start up at moderate speeds (12ft/minute roughly) and slowly work your finishers up throughout the day increasing speed with every truck to a max of about 35ft/minute.

Rates, fees and other general questions

How are we any cheaper?

Subcontracting out can be expensive, by comparison a job that may cost you 100,000 dollars to sub out will cost 80% less with our methods.

Do we subcontract for companies?

No we do not. We are here to help all companies with their slipforming requirements, big and small and we don’t want to kill the market with low prices.

We do have an approved list of local contractors trained by Gambini Consulting and a proven history of quality work that we can recommend.

What is the AVERAGE cost for our services?

The AVERAGE cost is $2800/project. This is largely dependent on mobilization fees, travel and accommodations if required.

Do we offer mobilization?

Yes, we have partners throughout North America that are able to move our machines to your site, but it will always be cheaper for you to move the machines with your own trailers if possible.

What trailers are acceptable to move these machines?

The smallest machine weighs 25,700lbs with a mold.. This will fit on a step deck, lowboy or a tow behind trailer with wide ramps. If you are unsure of your tow behind, you can send us pictures or questions at admin@gambiniconsulting.com

Do we have monthly, weekly and seasonal rates?

Yes! email us at admin@gambiniconsulting.com for more information.

What is our service area?

The equipment rental is available throughout Canada.

We are only limited by molds which we have every major mold used in these locations. Should we require a mold we do not have, we can have one manufactured within TWO weeks.

Will I be charged if mobilization is a days travel?

No, we will not charge you a machine rental for the day of travel.

Finishing the concrete

How can we follow behind a slipform machine without any experience?

Gambini Consulting specializes in training concrete crews with next to no experience. We have a great reputation and proven methods on achieving the highest quality product with minimal experience with our methods. Our operators are highly skilled requiring not much if any work behind the machine allowing for an easy day for people following behind the machine.

However, this request requires additional manpower to work alongside your concrete finishers and must be booked in advance with the equipment rental.

What if we do not have any concrete finishing tools?

Our operator will have all the required tools and forms to accomplish the SLIPFORM process.

Any additional tools required such as finishing trowels needs to be booked in advance with equipment rental.

Do you supply concrete finishers?

No we do not, that is your responsibility to supply the labor required.

Please check with us before to make sure you have the required amount of help and information for the profile you have chosen.

How Many finishers are required for the slipforming process?

This is largely dependent on the job site. With an experienced operator and a basic job 2 finishers behind and 1 chute man is more than enough. However, with a parking lot islands and corners, 4/5 plus 1 chute man is recommended.

Our molds have driveway finishers attached to them, eliminating the need for experienced labour behind the machine.

We do concrete all the time, but have never done slipforming

So you’ve jumped to the big leagues, right into slipforming thinking you’re a concrete finisher, this will be easy, you got 30 years experience, this will be a piece of cake and you’re worth top dollar right? Wrong.

Finishing concrete, any type of concrete product in forms is much easier than slipforming, you can beat it, wet it down so anyone without skill can finish it pretty much do whatever you want. But when it comes to slipforming, you’re just a rookie in this game.

This requires a whole different style of finishing concrete, something you cannot learn anywhere else. There is no form to save you and to stop it from falling over too much pressure with the float? it either falls over or goes sideways on you. To much pressure with the broom? the curb pancakes or goes sideways.

You’re learning concrete finishing all over again. Sure your years of experience will help when it comes to esthetics but not the actual finishing of the product. Did concrete fall over? Experienced concrete finishers can fix that without any forms.

But don’t worry, with our operators you won’t need much experience.

Scheduling and set up (Stringline, Base)

Can we set our own stringline?

Of course, whether you have your own stringline or we supply the stringline, but our prices and production make it worth while to have us accomplish this part of the project.

Our slipforming process requires advanced knowledge of setting stringline to eliminate the possibility of problems while pouring, such as pouring tight radius and pouring into corners.

What about weather delays? What about site delays?

If the machine is onsite you are responsible for any rental costs associated with weather delays or other delays. You are not responsible for operator costs unless the operator is onsite already.

If we can move the machine elsewhere, we will to help with those extra costs.

We will confirm the day before to make sure you are aware of the weather and this is one of the main reasons why we don’t move our machines until the night before to eliminate the possibility of any extra costs associated with delays.

What if your job is canceled or postponed?

If the machine hasn’t left for your job and mobilization can be canceled you will not be charged.

However, if the machine is already on-site you will be charged for that full day for the machine.

If the operator is on-site, you will also be charged for his rental time and any traveling fees associated with our operator.

How busy is our schedule?

We run a very strict schedule and value punctuality next to quality and we have met every deadline to date however, if we are onsite and your project is delayed, we will not delay several other projects as that would not be fair to others, we may not meet your new required deadline at that point and it would be accomplished within the coming week if it not possible to accomplish within the next day.

How do I schedule a date?

You can either call us at 705-688-6120 or email us at admin@gambiniconsulting.com to let us know about an upcoming project you may have. The more notice you give us the better it is for us as short notice may result in delays to your schedule.

Payment is required before any date is saved and should you choose to wait until the day before you want to pour, we would have not saved that date for you and the odds are you will be delayed.

Once the date approaches for your project, keep us posted in the days leading up to your desired date to pour and any delays associated with that.

This includes daily stringline rental fees for the duration the stringline is present on your project, along with stringline removal fees if the removal is deemed necessary ($150/hour with a minimum of 4 hours).

What about equipment and operator cancellation?

Should you decide to cancel your project with less than 48 hours’ notice, you will incur charges for the complete spectrum of rental fees, encompassing equipment, operator, mobilization, and stringline fees.
